What is AI Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AI Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can discover, understand, and cite it. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, AEO competes to be the source the AI names inside its one synthesized answer.

How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a ranked link a person clicks. AEO optimizes to be the source an AI engine quotes inside a single synthesized answer. It is a lane to add alongside the SEO you already do, not a replacement for it. The buyer research that used to span ten open tabs now happens inside one AI conversation, and if your content does not match the sub-queries that conversation generates, you are not ranked low. You are absent.
| SEO, the old game | What you should also be considering | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer behavior | Types a query, scans ten blue links. | Asks a question. AI splits it into five to eight sub-queries and returns one synthesized answer. |
| Goal | Rank in position one to three. | Be the source AI cites and recommends. |
| Optimized for | Crawlers and keyword match. | Machine extraction, structured evidence, answer-first content, dual human and AI legibility. |
| Unit of success | Ranking plus click. | Citation plus recommendation inside the AI answer. |
| Failure mode | Page two. | Absent from the answer, even when you are the best option. |
How does query fan-out work?
Query fan-out is how an AI engine answers a question. It rarely searches your exact words. It decomposes the question into five to eight sub-queries, retrieves a source for each, and synthesizes them into one reply. Your site can win some sub-queries and lose others, which is why AEO turns vague advice into a named list of gaps.
Here is the fan-out for one buyer question. This example site covers four of the eight sub-queries an engine generates, so it appears in half the answer and cedes the rest, price and compliance among them, to competitors.
The buyer question “What's the best fleet management software for a mid-market logistics team?” decomposes into 8 sub-queries. Covered: Which fleet software integrates with HubSpot and our CRM?; Best fleet software for a 50–500 vehicle fleet?; Can it do real-time GPS route tracking?; What do other mid-market logistics teams say?. Missed: How much does fleet management software cost?; Does it handle ELD and DOT compliance?; How fast is implementation and onboarding?; How is it different from an enterprise TMS?.
Why does AEO matter now?
The buyer journey is compressing into the AI answer. Comparison research that a buyer used to do across ten tabs now happens inside one conversation with an engine. The engine reads a handful of sources, names a few, and moves on. If you are not one of the sources it can parse and trust, you are invisible at the exact moment the buyer decides.
This is a new failure mode. In SEO you could rank on page two and still be found. In AEO, absence is silent. You never see the answer that left you out, and neither does your buyer.
How do you measure AEO?
You measure AEO by scoring each page the way an engine reads it. Audaeo uses the CLEAR framework to score every page 0 to 100 across five dimensions, from two perspectives at once: the human buyer's and the AI agent's. The gap between the two scores is the work list. A page can read clean to a person and parse badly to a machine, and that gap is where citations are lost.

Common questions about AEO
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO earns a ranked link that a person clicks. AEO earns a citation inside the single answer an AI engine writes. They share fundamentals like clean HTML and fast pages, but the unit of success is different: a ranking versus being named as the source.
Which AI engines does AEO target?
The answer engines buyers now use to research: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, and Claude. Each one retrieves and synthesizes content rather than returning a list of links, so each rewards content it can parse and quote.
Do I need to stop doing SEO to do AEO?
No. The technical base overlaps: HTTPS, semantic HTML, fast pages, and a clean sitemap help both. AEO adds structured evidence, answer-first writing, schema, and coverage of the sub-queries an engine generates. You extend the work, you do not replace it.
How do I know if AI engines can even read my site?
Check whether your content is in the raw HTML rather than rendered only by JavaScript, whether robots.txt allows AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot, and whether your key claims carry schema. An Audaeo audit checks all three and scores them.
How do I start with AEO?
Run an audit to see how an engine reads your site today, fix the machine-readability blockers, restructure your top pages answer-first, add structured evidence and schema, then re-measure. Audaeo grades each of these across the five CLEAR dimensions.
